Tibet Travel Guide

Tibet attracts the most curious of pilgrims and adventure seekers alike to its profound spirituality and infinite landscapes. Often named ‘the roof of the world’ Tibet stands at an elevation of more than 4,000 metres making it the highest area in the world.

Tibet is home to one of Asia’s most sacred peaks Mount Kailash (link to Mt Kailash Mythology), standing at 6,714 metres. Mount Kailash is home to God Shiva and a magnet for travellers in search of religious fulfilment as well as those who appreciate a spectacular visual experience. It is regarded as the destination of a lifetime for both Hindus and Buddhists and is the source of the region’s four greatest rivers: The Indus, the Brahmaputra (Tsangpo), Karnali (Ganges) and Sutlej; all of which are supplied by the sacred Lake Manasarovar.

Trekkers Society and our Chinese agents in Tibet (Lhasa) jointly run the Tibet tours and travel accompanied by a Tibetan, English speaking. In Tibet, travellers must have a tour guide to deal with all Chinese officials and Military Check Posts whilst also provides you with information and other services. For this reason, it is not possible to travel to Tibet independently.

Trekking in Tibet:

There is no finer trekking country on earth than Tibet, largely because it is surrounded by the most extensive and breathtaking mountain ranges anywhere on the planet. The legendary Himalayas stretch for almost 3,000km along Tibet’s southern boundary, while the equally rugged Karakoram borders the western extremity.

These two ranges contain all 14 of the world’s 8,000+ metre peaks, including Mount Everest. The northern part of Tibet is a high, arid expanse known as Chang Tang, while eastern Tibet is flanked by a chain of mountains where three of Asia’s largest rivers cut deep parallel gorges on their journey from the plateau to the sea.

Discover the gorgeous landscapes of Tibet, its people and fascinating structures like the Potala Palace in Lhasa and Jowo Lhakhang in Jokhang in our popular Tibet Cultural Tour.
